Test Proctoring Services

DSS provides test proctoring services to currently registered students with exam accommodations. If you have testing-related questions, reach out to [email protected].

Students must secure their space by submitting a test proctoring request, at least seven (7) days in advance of the examination date. Testing locations are assigned according to the student’s approved exam accommodations and the overall availability of space within the DSS office and across campus.

Throughout the academic year, DSS offers test proctoring services during the following days and times:

  • Regular Test Proctoring Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:30 pm
    • All exams must be completed by 5:30 pm
    • Testing location notifications will be sent to your GW email address the day before your exam, by the close of business
  • Finals Week Test Proctoring Hours: Monday - Saturday, 8:30 am - 6:30 pm
    • All exams must be completed by 6:30 pm
    • Final exam testing location notifications will be sent to your GW email address the day before your exam, by the close of business
Essential Considerations
  • Professors have the option of administering testing accommodations for students on their own which allows students to have equitable access to ask questions, receive directions, information about corrections and clarifications from faculty in a comparable manner as their peers. If you choose to take your exams outside of DSS, you will need to coordinate with your professor directly.
  • We recognize that the complexities of class scheduling and space constraints do not always make administering testing accommodations in class possible. If your professors are unable to provide testing accommodations, move forward with the request process.
Best Practices
  • Submit test proctoring requests at least seven (7) days in advance of each quiz and exam. The earlier you sign up for your quizzes, tests and exams, the better! It is best practice to avoid waiting until the last minute in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
  • One way to plan for this is to review the syllabus for each of your classes at the beginning of the semester and submit all of your exam requests. If you need support, students have found the strategies provided by Student Success to be helpful when organizing and planning out their exam schedules.
  • Before submitting each request, please review your professor's contact information, the exam date and time for accuracy. Under "Accommodations Required," check only the accommodations for which you have been approved.
  • Once your request has been approved, you will receive an email from the online test proctoring request system. Get in the habit of reviewing each approval in detail before arriving at your test proctoring location. Scroll all the way down to double check the “Test Information” section for any changes made by your professor.
  • Check in for your exam at least 10 minutes prior to your start time at your testing location (testing location notifications will be sent to your GW email address the day before your exam, by close of business.) If you are late 30 minutes or more, you will be asked to reschedule.
Inclement Weather, University Closings, Date Changes and Time Conflicts
  • In the event that the university is closed due to inclement weather, and this closing affects your exam arrangements, please contact [email protected] and copy your professor to reschedule your exams.
  • If the date of your exam changes, contact us at [email protected] as soon as possible with an email indicating that your professor has moved the exam date in addition to details on the new exam date and time. We will work with you to reschedule.
  • If you have back-to-back exams with several time conflicts, this is especially prevalent during midterms and finals, speak with your professors and negotiate an alternate exam start time as appropriate due to your back-to-back exam schedule and testing accommodations, (i.e. extended time.)
  • To Stay Informed regarding inclement weather or other University updates, you can always check the Campus Advisories page for the most up-to-date information and sign up for GW Alerts.
